Create a Vision
First off, you will need a vision for how you would like your garage bar to feel, some time to create the bar, and the space. As with most other do-it-yourself projects, your unique taste will be a large deciding factor in the materials you choose and the placement you decide on for your bar. We suggest starting off by taking some time to brainstorm what your vision for the bar is, take measurements in order to ensure you have enough space, and plan out the accessories you would like to have.
Gather Materials
While there are many materials and items you can add to your bar, we are going to go over the bare bones to get you started. Think about utilizing wood (such as plywood or pallets) in order to create your cool and cost-effective bar. Plus, you don’t even need to be a woodworking expert in order to build your own bar! Gather a few basic tools such as:
- Table saw
- Nails
- Nail gun
- Screw gun
- Caulk gun
If you don’t have any or all of these items, you can always ask around to see if any of your friends or neighbors would let you borrow them, and maybe even provide you with a helping hand for the project.
Using pallets is an awesome way to create the front of your bar with less effort. You can also place a nice accent piece on the top so that your bar really pops when looked at straight-on. You could also go with plywood on top of those pallets and paint your own cool design, or have your friends come over and make it entirely unique to your group. The options are virtually endless!
Size Your Bar
While there isn’t one set size that you need to make your bar, there are a few standard sizes for bar construction for you to consider with the size of your space in order to help you stay on track with your project. In general, the dimensions are:
- The height of bars are generally 42 inches.
- The height of bar stools should be around 30 inches.
- The top of the bar should be around 15–20 inches, but no more than 20.
- If you decide on installing a foot rail, consider having it be 1/2–3/4 foot off of the ground. to provide maximum comfort while sitting on the stools.
Consider Appliances
Save yourself constant trips to and from your house by installing appliances such as a compact sink, dishwasher, and a refrigerator. This way, you will have everything you need right there in your garage bar! The new Sink Wizard is the perfect addition to your garage bar or any other small space due to the fact that it is both a compact sink and dishwasher in one, effectively cleans your dishes in as little as 19 minutes, and is made of easy-to-clean stainless steel. Make It Your Own!
Lastly, and quite possibly the most fun part of creating your own garage bar, is adding decorations that really make it your own. Of course you will want to get some barstools, so find (or make) some to match the look you are going for. Then, hang up some posters of your favorite sports teams, musicians, movies, or celebrities, purchase a neon light or two, and of course some cool glassware! This is the part where your garage bar starts building its character and will keep your friends and family coming back again and again.
And there you have it! These are some of the basics of building your very own awesome garage bar. Just be sure to keep in mind that you can modify your materials, spacing, and design based on your unique garage and your idea of what a perfect garage bar is.
